HotSpot @Home

I've never been so proud to be a T-Mobile customer. An article in the New York Times says that T-Mobile announced last week a new service called HotSpot @Home which allows customers to talk over the phone through the internet (WiFi) for free. This is like VoIP service as provided by Skype only on your cellphone. This is great because it has the potential to save you a lot of money.
I know I'll be looking into adding this service to my plan and convincing my family. I'll just buy the cheapest plan possible since most of my long calls are made from home anyway. I might even cancel my home phone line. Of course, you can only use this service with two phones right now, neither of which I own, but I think it's worth the small investment.
I wonder if it's possible to create this service myself and avoid the $20 - $30 fee? Also, will this become available for the equally (if not more) innovative iPhone? I know that iPhone only works with AT&T services, but I see no reason why a company can't replicate the HotSpot @Home service. This may also tie in to copyright issues, which I'll have more to say about later.
